GAYFACE Art/Photography Installation PROJECT
In partnership with The BETSY South Beach & New World Symphony SOUNDScape Park
GayFace is a current collection of fine photography works by New York City photographer/artist, Ashley Kolodner.
Gay rights, as human rights, have long been thrown aside by the American society.

Queer culture is most often portrayed as radical, quirky, off-beat even unserious, or detrimental to social and familiar
norms.  The goal of this project is to break barriers that the LGBTQ community has lived under. The purpose is to
give this community the voice it deserves and the power to speak their truth.  This collection of works is done to
portray the innovative, personal, and participatory face of the gay movement and American culture at large and in
the home.

Elliot Torres was born and raised in Waukegan, Illinois.
He moved to New York City alone at the age of 17 in May
of 1994.  He attended Pace University where he graduated
in 1998 with a BA in Communications.  He has worked
behind the scenes in the fashion, music, television, film,
video game and magazine industries.  He was an
entertainment journalist for Loquesea.com from 2000-
2002 where he wrote 200 articles, which included movie
and music reviews, editorials and interviews with music
personalities.  In the summer of 2002, his debut collection of poetry, Five Years of Solitary
was released to an enthusiastic response.  It chronicled his experiences in New York City
as a young, gay Puerto Rican man from the age of 17-22.

Undaunted: A Poetic Journey is an account of the second phase of his life in New York
City.  The volume takes readers on a journey through this young writer’s emotional and
professional growth from his 22nd -27th year.  Elliot has appeared in various publications
such as QV, XY, Next, Clik, French publication Baby Boy magazine and Ambiente
Magazine. He was on the cover of Ambiente twice (2004 and 2008) and in January 2005
the magazine named him one of the Top Ten Gay Latinos of 2004.  He has read his
poetry and conducted workshops at many colleges and universities including Brown
University, Baruch College, Wheaton College, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
and NYU.

Elliot’s third book of poetry, Architecture of a Solipsistic Mind continues the writer’s
moment and exposes his reality about being a gay man in New York City.  In 2010, Elliot
became a Freelance Travel Writer contributing two travel guides to TheSavvyExplorer.
com.  He shared his travel insights on Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, South Africa, along
with The Garden Route.

Elliot completed writing his debut novel Game Over and is currently pitching it to literary
agents.  He will release his fourth poetry book One Last Tryst in 2014.  His travels have
taken him throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, Central & South America, Europe,
Asia and South Africa. He resides in NYC with his two Sphynx cats Klein and Sookie.

ABOUT THE BETSY: Dramatically poised alongside its Art Deco neighbors, The Betsy is a distinguished boutique hotel on Ocean Drive. The
Betsy’s 62 rooms and suites are private, beachside havens where sensory details, imaginative amenities, and inspirational design coalesce to
produce an unparalleled experience in South Beach.

ABOUT THE WRITER’S ROOM: The Writer’s Room, at The Betsy, is a new working studio space for visiting writers on Ocean Drive.  The project
was created as part of Betsy’s continuing effort to link past and present through the arts, and to pay homage to the many 'writing rooms', that
existed in pre-war hotels, where guests would record memories and link to home. Visiting writers will use a desk donated to the Betsy by the
Hyam Plutzik Centennial Committee to commemorate the poet’s sojourn as a solider in Florida during the 1940’s on his way to war. Born 100
years ago, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist before his death, Hyam Plutzik is the father of Betsy owner Jonathan Plutzik, and is a muse for many of
Betsy’s literary programs, such as poems on pillows, room libraries, and a lobby-based poetry collection that is 'open to the public'.
GAYFACE | Photography by Ashley Kolodner

GayFace is a current collection of fine photography works by New York City
photographer/artist, Ashley Kolodner.  Gay rights, as human rights, have long been
thrown aside by the American society.  Sexuality cannot be defined as black and
white for all. There are many members of the LGBTQ Community that do not identify
with just one label. Queer culture is most often portrayed as radical, quirky, off-beat
even unserious, or detrimental to social and familiar norms.  The goal of this project
is to break barriers that the LGBTQ community has lived under. The purpose is to
give this community the voice it deserves and the power to speak their truth.  This
collection of works is done to portray the innovative, personal, and participatory face
of the gay movement and American culture at large and in the home.

Each subject is photographed with their eyes closed, then eyes open. The images
are meant to be seen side by side. Closing their eyes gives the viewer a sense of the
subjects’ vulnerability. The eyes open, allows the subject to look the viewer directly in
the eye.  Once the photographs have been taken, each subject participates in a short
interview stating their name and their identifiable label of their choosing.

The work will then be projected onto different buildings and landmarks, to
superimpose this true-to-life image of the gay community and further the aims of the
movement in light of the current ACLU and marriage court cases.  She has and will
continue to tour the United States to shoot individuals who overtly, or covertly, identify
themselves within the LGBTQ community.  Her work has already contributed greatly
to the self-identity and empowerment of these individuals, producing a massive
support system.  This work will also be contributed to book projects, street art and
gallery exhibitions.  She is working to unify others in her movement in celebration of
sex, freedom of identity, freedom of association, and culture.

THE ARTIST
Ashley Kolodner is an artist and activist specializing in still photography. She was
born in Washington, DC, and graduated with a BA in commercial photography from
the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. After graduating, Ashley
traveled the US, living in Los Angeles, San Diego, Washington, and finally settling in
Brooklyn, NY with her pit bull Billie Holiday.

Ashley believes that her lifelong love of art in all of its forms, especially collage,
ceramics, fashion, painting, glass blowing, and music, has informed her unique style
of photography. Although she is young, her work is prolific. Ashley has photographed
the likes of Nas, Damien Marley, Mayer Hawthorne, and Nipsey Hustle, among
others. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines, news papers, galleries
and shows, including Toronto Fashion Week. Ashley’s work was featured in
Photographer’s Forum’s Best of Photography 2011.
